We see an array of emotions and reactions that we are not used to seeing in the other entries that feature a more seasoned agent.

Casino Royale set the new standard of greatness after the series had just come off of it's worst movie of the franchise with "Die Another Day", and laid out a path of what the Bond for a new generation would be like.

Craig proved to be worth his weight in gold as an actor of James Bond and someone willing to do many of his own stunts to provide an added element of realism.

If the James Bond franchise had to be rebooted, this was the way to do it. Daniel Craig gives the character a sense of deadliness not sensed since the Timothy Dalton days.

As much as I liked Connery, Moore, and Brosnan, and all delivered good performances, none of them seemed like sudden death with a bad attitude.

For a government assassin, such an attitude would be helpful. Daniel Craig sells that attitude convincingly. From the very start where he coolly terminates a traitor, to the very end where shoots a foe through the leg when it is clear he didn't have to, you know this Bond is cool about the job of dealing death.

I think of it as three movies in one. It starts as an action flick, segues into a cool spy mode with a very relaxed and long lasting poker tournament, and then gets back to the action again.

Although this movie does have scenes that remind you of the book, it is not a close cover of the book in the way the first few Connery movies were.

Altogether quite enjoyable, and closer to the way I perceived Bond as I read the books than most of the other Bond actors managed.

The DVD presentation meets current standards well. The picture is bright and sharp, and the sound quality is outstanding. If you liked this film in the theater, you won't be disappointed with the DVD.

I, like many, feared for the future of the franchise. None the less I can definitively say that Daniel Craig's performance in this movie may very well be the best Bond ever on the big screen.

He hits a much needed reset in the series and the focus departs from the gadgets and the girls and more so on the man and the struggle to adapt to his new "Double Oh" status.

Starting off with plenty of action it strikes a perfect balance in the course of the movie. Add some perfectly choreographed fight scenes, a record breaking car roll-over scene, and the mental game between he and Mads Mikkelsen over the tables, and there is simply nothing not to love about this film.

The closing scene where proffers forth his first utterance of the iconic "Bond. This collectors edition is packaged nicely and includes some nice extras to help one grasp the depth that Ion Productions took to modernize the Bond series and make Daniel Craig the new face of MI6.

I'm a Bond fan through and through, and have always considered the Sean Connery Bond movies to be the best. But there is just something about Casino Royale, and they way Daniel Craig brought out a side of Bond we'd never seen, that have made this my favorite Bond movie of all time.

Many will disagree about calling this the best Bond film ever, but I doubt that anyone who truly understands the Bond franchise would disagree that this is among the best Bond films, and is very worthy of the Bond heritage.

Carries on the Bond tradition wonderfully. We actually saw this first Daniel Craig movie last out of the Daniel Craig movies, and boy did that clear up a lot of stuff!

Excellent movie, made even more so by all the questions it answered. Will watch it over and over again. Daniel Craig could be our favorite out of all the Bond actors.

Might be a toss-up between him and Sean Connery but, in our opinion, Craig carries the character every bit as well as Connery.

This structure accounts for the unevenness of the novel, with the three set pieces highly effective and the intervening chapters serviceable at best.

Fleming was a big believer in writing fast and not looking back, and it shows in his novels. Poorly written, oddly structured, but with some great scenes.

It would be a shame for any spy-thriller fan to miss out on it. The electrifying set-piece scenes more than make up for its faults.

There have been three adaptations of Casino Royale , one television version and two movies. Nelson was miscast, the screenplay was unexceptional and it was swiftly forgotten.

The main legacy of this first version of Casino Royale was that CBS, who thought the Bond character could support a television series, asked Ian Fleming for more story outlines.

After the Sean Connery films ignited the James Bond phenomena, attempts were made to get Casino Royale filmed as part of the franchise.

It is generally regarded as a dismal failure. It was one of the most successful Bond films ever, both critically and commercially, and Daniel Craig and Eva Green were both praised for their acting.

Two of the core scenes of the novel occur during the second half of the movie: The ending is thematically similar to the book but much more action-packed and visual.

Interestingly, the parts of the film that really work are the ones inspired by the novel. The first half, which is an origin story for Bond unrelated to the novel, is much more formulaic.

The chase in the airport in particular could have been taken from a Roger Moore Bond movie. That the three highlights of the novel still work half a century later in a different medium shows how powerful they are.

Fleming decided that Bond should resemble both the American singer Hoagy Carmichael and himself, [30] and in the novel Lynd remarks that "Bond reminds me rather of Hoagy Carmichael, but there is something cold and ruthless.

Bond's order, to be served in a deep champagne goblet , was for "three measures of Gordon's , one of vodka , half a measure of Kina Lillet.

Shake it very well until it's ice-cold, then add a large thin slice of lemon peel. Speaking of Bond's origins, Fleming said that "he was a compound of all the secret agents and commando types I met during the war", [38] although the author gave many of his own traits to the character.

Fleming used the casino to introduce Bond in his first novel because "skill at gambling and knowledge of how to behave in a casino were seen William Cook in New Statesman [39].

Bond's superior, M, was largely based on Godfrey, Fleming's NID superior officer; [42] Godfrey was known for his bellicose and irascible temperament.

Casino Royale deals with the question of Anglo-American relations, reflecting the real-world central role of the US in the defence of the West.

Amis, in his exploration of Bond in The James Bond Dossier , pointed out that Leiter is "such a nonentity as a piece of characterization The treachery of Le Chiffre, with the overtones of a fifth column , struck a chord with the largely British readership as Communist influence in the trade unions had been an issue in the press and parliament at the time.

Benson considers the most obvious theme of the novel to be good versus evil. In light of Bond's conversation, Butterfield identifies a crisis of confidence in Bond's character, where he has "moved beyond good and evil" to the point where he does his job not because of principles, but to pursue personal battles.

Black also identifies a mechanism Fleming uses in Casino Royale —and in subsequent Bond novels—which is to use the evil of his opponents both as a justification of his actions, and as a device to foil their own plans.

Black refers to the episode of the attempted assassination of Bond by Bulgarian assassins which results in their own deaths. Casino Royale was first released on 13 April in the UK as a hardback edition by publishers Jonathan Cape, [73] with a cover devised by Fleming.

John Betjeman , writing in The Daily Telegraph , considered that "Ian Fleming has discovered the secret of the narrative art Thus the reader has to go on reading".

The critic for Time magazine examined Raymond Chandler 's The Long Goodbye alongside Casino Royale ; he praised Casino Royale , saying that "Fleming keeps his incidents and characters spinning through their paces like juggling balls.

Writing for The New York Times , Anthony Boucher wrote that the book belongs "pretty much to the private-eye school" of fiction. You should certainly begin this book; but you might as well stop when the baccarat game is over.
